The Elementary Classroom
What To Expect
In the elementary classroom, Montessori students build on the foundation they developed during their time in "the children's house," adding detail and depth of understanding to their existing knowledge.
In addition, students are given more responsibility for their own work, teaching them initiative, responsibility and time/self-management.
Students also learn social and environmental responsibility. In the classroom, we use eco-friendly "green" paper and cleaning products, encourage students to minimize their waste, use compost and recycling bins, and cultivate plants from seedlings to maturity over the course of the year.
Dress Code
Our school does not have a uniform. However, students are required todress appropriately for school. This means: no Crocs, flip-flops, or heelies. Excessively torn or dirty clothing is not appropriate for the classroom. Athletic shoes are required for P.E. Depending on the field trip, special attire may be required.
Nutrition
Nutrition and health classes are also regular parts of the curriculum. To further promote a healthy environment, parents are requested to observe the following guidelines when preparing lunches and snacks for their children to bring to school:
Students provide snacks for the classroom. Examples of appropriate snacks would be fruits, cheese, nuts or whole-grain bread.
Meals should consist of nutrient-rich "growing food" (fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein).
Drinks should be either 100% fruit juice or milk, preferably organic. Filtered water is always available in the classroom.
Minimize sugary and fatty desserts and treats.
No candy, sport drinks, carbonated beverages, etc.
For birthday celebrations, students are asked to bring a healthy alternative to cake, such as fruit or muffins.
Community Bulletin Board
To help students feel a sense of comfort and ownership of their environment, they are encouraged to bring photos and event notices (birthday parties, recitals, etc.) for the community bulletin board. The community bulletin board also contains information for parents, including current calendar and upcoming lesson information.
